The Horton Plaza district is bordered by the Marina district to the south, the Core district to the north, the Gaslamp Quarter to the east, and the Columbia district to the west. The renaissance of downtown San Diego began with opening of the Horton Plaza shopping and entertainment center.
This multi-use retail and entertainment project was truly pioneering for downtown San Diego, and the quality and success of this project sparked much of the redevelopment that has occurred in the peripheral. Today, the Horton Plaza district is home to Westfield Horton Plaza shopping center, which ingenuously houses over 140 shops and restaurants in a colorful labyrinth connecting seven open-air split levels. This shopping center is now a local landmark and a tribute to the creativity and history of San Diego. The mall is also home to a movie theatre and the Lyceum Theatre, which houses San Diego Repertory Theatre. Adjacent to the mall is the Westin Hotel, Spreckels and Balboa Theaters, and the Federal Courthouse & Office Building. Residential opportunities may be limited, but this 15-block area puts residents at the center of Downtown's activity. The area includes luxury condominiums and apartments amidst high-rise office buildings, retail, hotels, theaters and restaurants. Upcoming developments include the 460-room Hotel InterContinental and the Balboa Theatre restoration.
