The Marina district is bordered by the Gaslamp Quarter to the east, the Columbia district to the north, and San Diego Bay to the south and west. Once comprised of warehouses and vacant lots, through redevelopment starting the early 1980's, the neighborhood now offers luxury high-rise condominiums with spectacular water views, mid-rise condominiums and apartment buildings, townhouses, loft and single-room-occupancy (SRO) units in a variety of styles, sizes and prices.

Characterized by its open space, educational and cultural sites, and its convenient locale, "the Marina" as it is affectionately called, is a remarkable residential setting for families, professionals and retirees. There is dog friendly historic Pantoja Park, Children's Park with its urban forest, reflecting pool and fountain, and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Promenade providing a relaxing walk to Petco Park. Public venues in the neighborhood include the Children's Museum, Seaport Village, a portion of the Asian Pacific Thematic Historic District, and a farmers market every Sunday morning.
